Following brutal attacks by riot police against unarmed non-violent student protesters at Occupy Cal, Berkeley Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau had this to say:

“It is unfortunate that some protesters chose to obstruct the police by linking arms and forming a human chain to prevent the police from gaining access to the tents. This is not non-violent civil disobedience…”

“…We regret that, given the instruction to take down tents and prevent encampment, THE POLICE WERE FORCED TO USE THEIR BATONS to enforce the policy.”

While students prepare their civil case against him, the Alameda County District Attorney and the California Attorney General should also be investigating what criminal charges may be brought. Former Governor Ronald Reagan would no doubt be proud of the barbaric tactics employed by this ignoramus, but the the Regents of the University of California must act now to remove this man from office. The utter lack of common decency and sound judgement his actions, and now these comments, demonstrate must not, can not, be tolerated.
